SNOHOMISH COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICTS
The formation of school districts in Snohomish County (listed below) followed the development of early communities and were a sign of  their stability and attractiveness to families. With transportation severely limited, it was necessary to create many local districts, some to serve only a few isolated families. Others were centered around logging camps or farming areas.
In the latter part of the nineteenth century, an eighth grade education was standard. If parents wanted more for their children they sent them to private schools such as Coupeville's Puget Sound Academy where D. Carl Pearson was sent by his parents, D. O. and Clara Pearson of Stanwood. In 1890 it was the only institution of higher learning north of Seattle. With the new courthouse building vacant in Snohomish following removal of the county seat to Everett, the academy then moved into that structure and operated there for several years.
As the population grew rapidly after 1900 and the economy created a larger tax base, most cities and towns erected substantial high school buildings and a curriculum designed for a wider variety of student needs. This induced nearby rural districts to consolidate with them, as they were unable to afford a full twelve grades of instruction.
The list below was compiled by Educational Service District 189 and is held in the Washington State Archives Northwest Region in Bellingham.
